It recently occurred to me that thanksgiving and adoration are different. They complement each other, sure, but if you’ve ever prayed using the ACTS acronym (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) you know they’re not interchangeable.
As I scoured the Web and leafed through my books for clues to clarify the difference between two things I have always considered to be the same, I realized that adoration focuses on who God is, while thanksgiving dwells on what He’s done.
I’ve loved Jesus nearly my entire life and I’m just now learning this?!
When I come to the throne of God during my quiet time, I am intentional about seeking His will and offering praise, rather than simply offering up a wish list like He is a genie in a lamp or Santa Claus.
But even if I’m not focusing on my wants all the time, and sprinkle in acknowledgement of and thanksgiving for the things He’s done … if I’m honest, I lack in moments of adoration.
The thesaurus offers this definition of adoration: “Fierce love and admiration,” and lists synonyms such as, devotion, reverence, attachment, exaltation, glorification, honor, passion, and worship.
Yes, yes, yes! my soul cries out.
“Learn how to worship Me in a new way,” the Lord whispers in my ear.
So that’s what I’m doing. That’s what this devotional is—diving in and learning to build a new vocabulary of praise and adoration in prayer. I’m learning alongside you.
